The Bay of Plenty community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of two local boys, Luti Maui Mafi, aged 11, and Pauly Lloyd, aged 10, who were tragically killed in a riverbank collapse at the Tarawera River in Kawerau. The incident occurred while the boys were enjoying a day of fishing and playing with friends.
Luti’s family expressed their deep sorrow on social media, describing him as a beloved son, nephew, and friend who brought joy and kindness to those around him. They indicated that a private service for close family members would take place soon, reflecting how profoundly he will be missed by many.
Both Tarawera High School and Kawerau Putauaki School confirmed the identities of the deceased students, which prompted the schools to close for Monday and Tuesday in light of this tragic event. Tributes have poured in from the local junior rugby club, emphasising the boys’ active participation in the community and acknowledging their loss as devastating.
Emergency services were called shortly after the accident occurred, with reports indicating that a group of children had been playing near the river when the bank collapsed, trapping Luti and Pauly beneath it. Despite immediate rescue efforts by police and local volunteers, the boys were sadly pronounced dead shortly after their discovery.
The community’s response has been one of shock and grief, with local residents expressing profound sadness over the incident. One resident, Kurūtia Tanoa, noted the distress amongst other children present and highlighted the community’s shared sorrow when tragedies affect their youth.
In honour of the boys, local iwi implemented a rāhui, or cultural prohibition, on the Tarawera River, instituting restrictions on activities such as swimming and fishing that will remain in place until April 2026. Residents wishing to pay their respects can do so from a specific vantage point, maintaining appropriate distance from the river.
Kawerau’s mayor, Faylene Tunui, conveyed her condolences in a heartfelt statement, underscoring the community’s solidarity with grieving families and their collective commitment to support them during this painful time.
The deaths have been referred to the coroner, and as the community comes together to heal, they aim to support and uplift each other through this difficult period. Throughout this sadness, the spirit of unity and love among the people of Kawerau remains strong as they honour the memories of Luti and Pauly, whose lives have touched so many in their community.
