A tragic dog attack occurred in Perth’s northern suburb of Dianella, resulting in the death of a small dog and serious injuries to its owner. The incident took place during an early morning walk when two unleashed dogs attacked the pair. The attack was captured on CCTV, highlighting a troubling trend of increasing dog attacks in the area.
The small dog was seized from its owner’s arms by the larger dogs and brutally mauled on a driveway at Sycamore Rise, while the owner desperately attempted to rescue her pet. Screams filled the air as a neighbour intervened with a stick to separate the dogs. Unfortunately, the woman sustained significant injuries to her arms, and her dog did not survive the attack.
Witnesses reported seeing the two dogs wandering freely about an hour prior to the assault, raising concerns about their safety. Following the attack, neighbours managed to confine the aggressive dogs until rangers arrived to impound them. City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin described the footage as "one of the most distressing" he had encountered, emphasising that the dogs were clearly not under control at the time of the incident. He expressed uncertainty about how the dogs ended up in such a situation but highlighted the necessity for pet owners to manage their animals properly.
The city has approximately 25,000 registered dogs and regularly faces similar reports of attacks. Mayor Irwin conveyed a stern reminder to dog owners, urging them to keep their pets on a leash and to be aware of their dogs’ behaviour, especially if they have a history of being reactive.
In light of this incident, there is a pressing call for responsible dog ownership to prevent further attacks and ensure community safety.
