Australia’s south-eastern region is poised for a notably cold weekend, with temperatures predicted to approach, or even fall below, freezing. According to Weatherzone, this weekend is anticipated to record the coldest nights of the year thus far, with Thredbo in NSW expected to plunge to -5 degrees Celsius.
In Victoria, alpine resorts may experience temperatures as low as -3 degrees, while Melbourne could see the mercury drop to around 5 degrees tomorrow morning. Tasmania’s Central Plateau will also feel the chill, with Liawanee forecasted to reach -4 degrees on Sunday morning.
Angus Hines, a meteorologist from the Bureau of Meteorology, indicates that this marks the start of genuinely cold mornings for many locations. He attributes the drop in temperature to a high-pressure system dominating the south and south-east, along with clear skies and minimal wind, which together promote significant cooling over the coming mornings.
Canberra is likewise expected to experience temperatures dipping below freezing, with a possible low of -1 degree on early Sunday. The cold front is predicted to sweep through the Northern Tablelands, affecting areas like Guyra and Glen Innes by Monday.
Despite the frigid conditions, Hines notes that the south-east can also look forward to bright and sunny days, albeit with significantly lower temperatures compared to those experienced earlier in the week.
