A young man is currently recuperating in hospital after sustaining injuries from a crocodile attack at a well-known camping area situated north of Broome. The incident took place early in the morning of April 18, while the man, in his 20s, was asleep on a beach adjacent to Hidden Creek, located north of the Coulomb Point Nature Reserve in the Kimberley region.

Following the attack, the man was initially taken to Broome Hospital in stable condition and subsequently airlifted to Jandakot in Perth by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. He has since been transferred to Royal Perth Hospital, where he is undergoing surgery for his injuries.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) confirmed they were alerted to the incident involving a large crocodile approximately 50km north of Broome. DBCA officials have already contacted a relative of the victim and plan to discuss the event further with those involved.

In light of this attack, the department has issued a warning for increased vigilance when camping in areas known as “Croc Country.” It is crucial for campers to understand that saltwater crocodiles inhabit the Kimberley region year-round. The DBCA recommends that individuals take precautions by choosing camping locations at least 50 metres from water’s edge and ensuring that children and pets remain safely distanced from the shoreline.

DBCA has announced plans for a site visit as part of the ongoing investigation. They emphasised that crocodiles are prevalent in the Kimberley and urged the public to exercise caution, reminding everyone that personal safety is ultimately their responsibility. Community members are encouraged to report any crocodiles that exhibit aggressive behaviour or approach people to the nearest Parks and Wildlife Service office.

As the investigation continues, the DBCA reiterated the importance of being “CROCWISE” when near water bodies throughout northern Australia, including estuaries, tidal rivers, and offshore island waters.
