A significant section of the Hume Highway in Victoria has been closed in both directions due to a serious multi-vehicle accident. The incident, involving a B-double truck and multiple other vehicles, occurred south of Violet Town, disrupting traffic flow in this major transit route that connects Sydney and Melbourne.
Emergency services responded promptly, with two adults and two children being transported to hospital in Wangaratta for medical assessment. Their current condition remains unconfirmed. Six units from the Country Fire Authority, along with police, State Emergency Service (SES) personnel, and ambulances, are on-site managing the situation.
Violet Town, located south of Shepparton, is a rural community impacted by this closure. The Hume Highway is one of Australia’s busiest freight corridors, with thousands of trucks traversing it daily.
For those travelling northbound, VicTraffic advises a detour via the Goulburn Valley Highway through Seymour to Shepparton, then back via Benalla on the Midland Highway. Southbound drivers are instructed to exit at Violet Town and take the Murchison-Violet Town Road to the Goulburn Valley Highway, rejoining the Hume at Seymour. These alternative routes may extend travel times by approximately 45 minutes.
