Two young boys, Luti Maui Mafi, 11, and Pauly Lloyd, 10, tragically lost their lives following a riverbank collapse at the Tarawera River in Kawerau, Bay of Plenty. The incident occurred yesterday while they were enjoying a day of fishing and playing with friends.

Luti’s family expressed their profound grief in a heartfelt Facebook tribute, describing him as a beloved son, nephew, and friend who brought joy and kindness to those around him. A service for close family will be held soon to honour his memory. Meanwhile, Tarawera High School, which Luti attended, announced it would be closed for two days due to the heartbreaking loss. Pauly was a student at Kawerau Putauaki School, which also confirmed his death and scheduled a closure to support the community’s grieving process.

The local rugby club conveyed their sorrow over the loss of the boys, recognising them as valued members of the community. A message of support encouraged families to hold their children close amidst this tragedy. Emergency services responded promptly to the site at approximately 11:30 am, where a group of children had been playing when the bank gave way.

Despite efforts by responding police officers, who swam across the river to search for the boys, their rescue came too late. Acting Inspector Phil Gillbanks praised the bravery of the officers and local volunteers who worked tirelessly under difficult conditions. Community member Kurūtia Tanoa noted the distress of children at the scene and the emotional toll on the families involved.

In the wake of the incident, a rāhui (restraining order) has been placed on the Tarawera River by local iwi, prohibiting all recreational activities on the river until April 23, 2026. Those wishing to pay respects are advised to do so from a designated area on the western side of the river.

Kawerau’s mayor, Faylene Tunui, shared her condolences, stating that the community stands in solidarity with the grieving families and would offer support during this painful time. The boys’ tragic deaths have been referred to the coroner for further investigation.

This incident has left the community in deep mourning, highlighting the love and unity among its members in the face of such a devastating loss.
