LIV Golf has responded robustly to reports suggesting the league’s imminent demise, labelling the gossip as “absolute nonsense” propagated by “fast typists.” This came during the broadcast of its event in Mexico, which unfortunately suffered significant technical difficulties. The transmission was offline for over two hours due to a “severe local power outage,” marking the second episode of power-related issues for the week.

Earlier reports had indicated that the LIV league was on the verge of collapse, with speculation suggesting that the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund was considering withdrawing its financial support. In a communication to staff, LIV CEO Scott O’Neil assured them that funding was secure until the year’s end, but notably did not extend the timeline to 2027 or beyond, which raised eyebrows, especially since he had previously stated funding would last until 2031.

Commentator Arlo White attempted to defuse the situation during the broadcast, stating that fears over the league’s future were exaggerated. He relayed a conversation with O’Neil, who expressed confidence about LIV’s trajectory. Veteran golf commentator David Feherty chimed in, criticising the speed at which misinformation was spreading and suggesting that some in the media were misrepresenting the reality of the situation.

Despite efforts to shift the narrative, further complications arose when it was revealed that the league faces a lawsuit from the Premier Golf League (PGL), its predecessor which had sought partnerships with Saudi investors in 2019. The lawsuit alleges that LIV improperly appropriated the PGL’s concept, bringing additional scrutiny to the organisation.

Despite these setbacks, the tournament had a thrilling moment with player Joaquin Niemann scoring a hole-in-one at the start of the gameplay. However, viewers were soon confronted with technical difficulties, leading to a blank screen and an apology for the disruption. Following the outage, White noted the hope that future broadcasts would remain uninterrupted as they continued with the event.

In summary, while LIV Golf strives to maintain a positive outlook amid challenges, both operational and legal troubles threaten to cloud its future. The league’s executives are under pressure to address technical issues, counteract negative media coverage, and navigate potential legal ramifications from former associates.
