A chilling case has emerged in Brisbane where Maree Mavis Crabtree, 59, is on trial for the alleged murder of her son, Jonathan, aged 26. The prosecution claims Crabtree administered a lethal overdose of painkillers to Jonathan in a smoothie on 19 July 2017, shortly before filing a $125,000 insurance claim. Additionally, she is also charged with attempted murder from earlier that year.

During the proceedings at the Brisbane Supreme Court, Crabtree has pleaded not guilty to all charges. As part of the trial, the jury is reviewing nearly five hours of pre-recorded testimony from Tara Crabtree, Maree’s daughter, who was living with both her mother and brother at the time of the incident.

Tara testified that while Jonathan was incapacitated in bed, Maree crushed prescription painkillers and anti-anxiety pills using a hammer and mixed the powder into a fruit smoothie, which contained various fruits such as watermelon and mango. She stated, “She asked me to keep lookout for my brother. He came out and she gave it to him.”

Following Jonathan’s return to his room, Tara reported hearing him struggling but claimed their mother urged her not to intervene. Tara further revealed that Maree expressed hopes of a peaceful life without Jonathan, who she described as violent and difficult to live with due to severe behavioural changes following injuries from a car accident.

It was also noted that Jonathan co-owned the family home, making eviction impossible, which added a layer of complexity to their family dynamics. Tara recalled her mother expressing fears about the potential repercussions if Jonathan survived, fearing arrest and the possibility of Tara being forced into a group home.

After Jonathan’s death, Tara claimed she was instructed by Maree to inform police that he had committed suicide, expressing astonishment at her mother’s behaviour in the immediate aftermath.

The jury will soon witness a cross-examination of Tara by Crabtree’s defence barrister, further delving into the troubling details surrounding the case. The trial continues as the court hears more about the events leading up to Jonathan’s tragic death.
