Police in Melbourne are currently seeking the assistance of the public in locating a man who may have witnessed an alleged sexual assault earlier this year. The incident reportedly occurred at the Billboard Saturdays nightclub on Russell Street on New Year’s Day.
Authorities believe that this male witness played a crucial role in aiding the female victim after she collapsed within the venue. In an effort to identify him, police have released images showcasing his appearance.
The man in the released photos is described as a tall Caucasian with short hair styled to one side and no facial hair. He was last seen wearing a long-sleeved button-up shirt, trousers, and sneakers.
Police urge anyone who might have information regarding either the identity of the witness or details surrounding the alleged assault to reach out. Tips can be provided to Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000, or they can report online anonymously.
It’s important to note that a separate individual has been apprehended in connection with the alleged assault on the same night, as well as another incident on Corrs Lane. This individual, a 22-year-old French national, was intercepted by police at Sydney International Airport on January 4 before being extradited to Melbourne. He faces serious charges, including two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault, and is scheduled to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on May 22.
The police are keen to make contact with the witness to gain more insight into the events of that night, emphasising the importance of community cooperation in such sensitive matters.
