Authorities in Melbourne are seeking assistance following a string of suspicious fires at various hospitality venues across the city. In the past week, incidents have included two confirmed fires, one act of arson, and two attempted arsons targeting licensed establishments in the metropolitan area.
Detectives are investigating possible links between the incidents and any underlying motives. Detective Inspector Chris Murray of the Arson and Explosives Squad highlighted the serious risks associated with fire, noting that those responsible often face severe injuries or even death, far outweighing any financial incentive they might receive. He emphasised that fire is unpredictable, putting not only the perpetrators at risk but also threatening the safety of the local community and the livelihoods of business owners.
The series of incidents began with an attempted arson on Lonsdale Street around 6am on Tuesday, followed by a fire on York Street in South Melbourne at approximately 3am the next day. A 25-year-old man from Coburg has been arrested in connection with this early event.
Additional incidents escalated, with reports of a fire on Commercial Road in South Yarra after 4am, coinciding with another attempted arson at a venue on Cecil Street. Just this morning, a drive-by shooting occurred alongside an arson on Southbank Boulevard, both happening in quick succession shortly after 4am. Two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, were arrested shortly thereafter in relation to the latter arson.
In light of these alarming events, police are urging anyone with information regarding the fires or the individuals involved to step forward. Detective Murray has asked the public to report anything suspicious, particularly in Melbourne’s entertainment areas this weekend, reminding people to call emergency services if they notice anything unusual, such as a vehicle driving erratically or individuals acting strangely.
Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000, or submit an anonymous report online. The police are keen to gather insights before they reach out to potential witnesses.
