Police in Melbourne are seeking public assistance following a spate of suspicious fires at hospitality venues across the metropolitan area. Over the past week, there have been two confirmed fires, one act of arson, and two attempted arsons targeting licensed premises.

Investigating detectives are looking into whether there may be a connection between these incidents and are keen to uncover any possible motivations behind the arsons. Detective Inspector Chris Murray from the Arson and Explosives Squad has issued stern warnings about the dangers of fire, emphasizing that both the perpetrators and surrounding communities are at severe risk. He highlighted that those responsible often put their lives in jeopardy for scant compensation compared to the potential for loss of life.

The series of events began early last Tuesday with an attempted arson on Lonsdale Street, followed by a fire at a York Street venue in South Melbourne shortly after 3am on Wednesday. Subsequently, a 25-year-old man from Coburg was arrested in connection with this incident.

Recent incidents have included a fire on Commercial Road in South Yarra and another attempted arson at a Cecil Street venue, both occurring just after 4am. This alarming trend continued with a drive-by shooting and an arson on Southbank Boulevard, both happening within a mere ten minutes early yesterday. Two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, were arrested shortly thereafter.

Authorities are urging anyone who might have information regarding these incidents, including identities of those involved or suspected motivations, to step forward. Detective Murray specifically encouraged community vigilance, advising residents to report any unusual behaviour while out and about, especially over weekends in entertainment precincts.

People with information are encouraged to reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or via their confidential online portal. Police have reiterated the importance of public awareness, urging residents to report anything suspicious—be it unusual vehicle movements or odd behaviour.
