Trump Appoints Joe Kent as Top Counterterrorism Official Out of Sympathy for His Wife’s Passing

Donald Trump recently revealed that he appointed Joe Kent to a significant national security role out of sympathy following the death of Kent’s wife. Kent, who previously led the National Counterterrorism Centre, resigned last month in opposition to Trump’s stance on the Iran conflict and has since publicly criticised Trump’s foreign policy.

Trump shared his sentiments on Truth Social, labelling Kent as “dumb” and reflecting on their encounter at Dover Air Force Base in 2019 when Kent’s late wife, Shannon Mary Kent, a Navy cryptologic technician killed by a suicide bomber in Syria, was being repatriated.

Despite acknowledging the brief connection formed during this tragic moment, Trump expressed disappointment that Kent has displayed disloyalty after being hired, which he justified by saying he felt compelled to help Kent after his election losses and personal tragedy. He cited that Kent quickly remarried and described him as a “sleazebag” and a “leaker.”

Kent, a former Army Ranger with extensive combat experience, has diverged sharply from Trump’s views. In a recent post on social media, he critiqued the escalation of military involvement in the Middle East, arguing against pursuing a maximalist policy towards Iran, warning that it could lead to unnecessary conflict and loss of American lives. He emphasised the need for the U.S. to learn from history and consider diplomatic resolutions rather than military interventions.

In his resignation letter, Kent articulated his moral objections to the conflict in Iran, asserting that the nation did not pose a legitimate threat to the U.S., and suggested that the war’s initiation was influenced by external pressures from Israel. Throughout his tenure, Kent’s far-right political stance raised eyebrows, but it wasn’t until his resignation that the extent of his critique of Trump’s position became evident.

This rift showcases a growing divide between some former Trump allies and the former president, as Kent’s stance not only reflects his personal beliefs but also signals broader disagreements within conservative circles regarding U.S. foreign policy strategy.
