In South Australia, recent electoral developments have shed light on issues surrounding the counting of votes in the Narungga electorate, where One Nation candidate Chantelle Thomas won by a mere 58 votes. Following a tight race in the March 21 elections, a recount was ordered after the Electoral Commission of South Australia (ECSA) discovered 81 unopened ballot papers from a nearby district, prompting a third vote count.

The unopened ballots were retrieved from the Port Pirie early voting centre, raising questions about the handling of votes by the ECSA. Acting commissioner Leah McLay confirmed the additional recount, noting the importance of ensuring every legitimate vote is counted. She expressed support for any independent reviews regarding the electoral process and preparations for upcoming elections.

Thomas expressed her disappointment over the recount announcement, highlighting the impact of delays on the community’s confidence in the electoral system. She questioned the integrity of the electoral process, suggesting that the recent electoral laws, which were enacted with bipartisan support, may have compromised the ECSA’s preparedness. Thomas asserted that the unexpected recount signifies significant challenges the commission faces in conducting reliable elections.

Deputy Premier Kyam Maher acknowledged the complexities of running elections, which include thousands of workers and over a million votes to tally. In light of the counting discrepancies, the government has initiated an independent review to assess the election’s execution and voter experiences.

Narungga was the last of the lower house seats to be confirmed, bringing the conservative One Nation party its fourth seat in Parliament following a substantial Labor victory. Thomas defeated Liberal candidate Tania Stock to secure her position. The wider implications of the uncounted votes extend to doubts about other seat outcomes, as raised by SA Liberal leader Ashton Hurn, who described the situation as “hugely concerning.”

As authorities prepare for the recount, the situation has sparked a conversation about the need for improved electoral safeguards to prevent future discrepancies in the voting process.
