In New South Wales (NSW) and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), school zone speed limits have been reinstated, despite students still being away on Easter break. Today marks a development day for staff, with students returning on the upcoming Tuesday in the ACT and Wednesday in NSW. As of this morning, the 40 km/h speed limits implemented in school zones are back in effect.

The penalties for exceeding the speed limit in these zones can be substantial. In NSW, fines may reach up to $3,242, and high-range offences can lead to the loss of seven demerit points. In the ACT, offenders could face fines up to $2,136 and six demerit points. It’s important to note that school zone rules apply throughout all scheduled school term dates, which include staff development days. Last year, NSW increased the number of these days from six to eight, with two falling at the start of Term 2.

Other states, such as Victoria and Western Australia, have also reinstated school zone speed limits today. However, the implementation of staff development days in these areas varies by local decision. In NSW, school zones typically operate on weekdays from 8:00 am to 9:30 am and from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm, although some schools may have different timings.

As drivers navigate this return to school zone regulations, it is crucial to remain vigilant and adhere to speed limits to ensure the safety of students when they resume classes.
