In a remarkable rescue, 77-year-old Antonina, a Ukrainian woman, was saved from a war zone by an unmanned robot after spending four months hiding in a basement in the Donetsk region amid ongoing conflict. Antonina and her family decided to flee when a temporary lull in attacks presented an opportunity. However, as her family made their escape, Antonina struggled to keep pace, visibly relying on two walking sticks as she made her way along a desolate village road.

Just when Antonina contemplated returning to the bunker, she encountered a peculiar robot, which she initially could not identify. “Who knows what it was – how would I know?” she remarked upon her encounter, but it turned out this strange machine was destined to bring her help. The Ukrainian military, which typically uses such unmanned robots for evacuating injured soldiers, had sent the vehicle after drones identified Antonina’s struggle.

A soldier involved in the operation shared that they had resorted to using car mats and a spray can to communicate with her, writing the words “Grandma, get in” in a frantic attempt to assure her of their good intentions. The four-hour evacuation journey was fraught with danger, navigating road conditions ravaged by shelling, as Russian forces have previously targeted these robotic vehicles.

Now safe, Antonina expresses gratitude for her survival and has visions of a peaceful future. “My dream is for the war to end, for there to be peace, and for people not to die the way they are dying now,” she shared, calling for an end to the violence affecting her homeland.

This incident underscores the potential of technology in humanitarian efforts, particularly in conflict zones, and highlights the resilience of individuals like Antonina in the face of adversity.
