Spirit Airlines, the low-cost American carrier, has officially ceased operations after 34 years, leaving numerous passengers stranded and around 17,000 employees without jobs. On May 2, the airline declared an “orderly wind-down,” stating that all flights had been cancelled and advising customers not to go to the airport.

Passengers arriving at various US airports were met with deserted check-in counters and notices of the abrupt cancellation of all services. The airline attributed its closure to soaring jet fuel costs—over a 100% increase since the commencement of the conflict in the Middle East—and other financial pressures. Despite an earlier restructuring plan secured with bondholders in March 2026, the recent surge in fuel prices rendered the company unable to continue operations, according to Spirit’s President and CEO, Dave Davis.

The airline’s demise was compounded by significant issues predating the current crisis, including previous bankruptcy filings and an unsuccessful attempt to obtain government assistance just days before the collapse. Spirit’s troubles intensified following the COVID-19 pandemic, during which it recorded losses exceeding US$2.5 billion since early 2020. In November 2024, the airline filed for bankruptcy protection and again in August 2025, with debts reported at $11.2 billion against assets of $11.9 billion.

Efforts to reform operations involved cutting costs, but just six months later, the airline requested an emergency bailout from the government, which ultimately failed. The recent collapse of negotiations for a $500 million bailout further sealed its fate.

While Spirit serviced a wide array of destinations across the Americas, the shutdown has led to the cancellation of approximately 9,000 flights scheduled through the end of May, affecting millions of travellers. Refunds will be processed for those who booked directly with Spirit, while third-party reservations will require customers to liaise with their travel agents for compensation.

The closure has raised concerns regarding the financial stability of other low-cost airlines amid escalating operational costs, heralding a potential wave of challenges for the industry. In these challenging times, many seek answers and support as the fallout from Spirit Airlines’ abrupt cessation continues to unfold.
