Andrew Johns has praised Benji Marshall for revitalising the Wests Tigers, declaring that they are now “playing without fear” and emerging as serious contenders for the premiership. The Tigers, who haven’t reached the finals since 2011, have faced numerous challenges including coaching changes, internal conflicts, and the departure of key players. However, in his third year as head coach, Marshall has transformed the team’s fortunes.
Currently, the Tigers sit in second place on the ladder with four wins from five games, trailing only the Panthers. Notably, they achieved a commendable 32-14 victory against the Warriors in Auckland earlier in the season. This turnaround is highlighted by their impressive teamwork and strong performances on the field.
As the team prepares to face the Broncos in Campbelltown, they are bolstered by the return of star five-eighth and co-captain Jarome Luai from injury. Brad Fittler commended the Tigers for their good teamwork and effective strategies, particularly noting their ability to handle fatigue during games without succumbing to pressure. Players like Jock Madden, Adam Doueihi, and Jahream Bula are making significant contributions, showcasing their strike power and cohesiveness.
When asked if the Tigers could realistically contend for the title, Johns affirmed their potential, indicating that their current form suggests they are a resilient and dynamic team capable of upsetting stronger opponents. Fittler echoed this sentiment, noting that if the Tigers continue their winning streak, they will only improve further, especially with young talents like Samuela Fainu and Bula stepping up alongside the seasoned Doueihi.
Madden, who performed well in Luai’s absence, has now moved to the bench to accommodate the returning star. Fittler remarked on the significance of Madden’s steady performance, particularly his kicking skills, in supporting the team during Luai’s absence. The prospect of how Luai will reintegrate into the team remains intriguing, with suggestions that Madden might remain a utility player while Luai and Doueihi lead in the halves.
Overall, the mental shift in the Tigers under Marshall, characterised by a fear-free style of play, appears to be a critical factor in their recent success and could be the key to further victories as the season progresses.
