Andrew Johns has applauded Benji Marshall for instilling a “no fear” mentality in the Wests Tigers, asserting that they are serious contenders for the premiership this season. Historically, the Tigers have struggled, failing to reach the finals since 2011, facing numerous setbacks including coaching changes and the departure of star players. However, under Marshall’s leadership in his third year as head coach, the club is showing significant improvement.
Currently, the Tigers boast an impressive record of four wins out of five games, placing them second on the NRL ladder, trailing only the Panthers. Their standout performance came in round four, where they defeated the Warriors by 32-14 in Auckland.
This Saturday, the Tigers will take on the Broncos in Campbelltown, bolstered by the return of co-captain Jarome Luai, who is back from a knee injury. Brad Fittler praised the Tigers for their teamwork and effort, noting their ability to manage pressure during matches. He observed their strong kicking game, particularly from Jock Madden, who has been instrumental in the absence of Luai, alongside Adam Doueihi and rising talents like Jahream Bula.
Johns is confident in the team’s capacity to go the distance this season, noting their freedom in play and self-belief, reminiscent of Marshall’s own playing style. Both he and Fittler highlighted the potential for continued improvement among the players, including rising stars like Samuela Fainu and Bula, as well as a revitalised Doueihi.
Fittler remarked on Madden’s solid contribution in the halves while expressing interest in how Luai will reintegrate into the squad. There’s speculation on whether Madden will remain in the halves alongside Luai or shift to a utility role. However, Johns firmly believes that Madden’s best position is as a bench utility, suggesting that if Luai and Doueihi are fit, they should lead the halves, with Madden providing support from the bench.
In summary, the Wests Tigers, invigorated by Marshall’s coaching and a balanced squad, are poised for a promising season, eyeing a potential return to finals football after years of struggles.
