In Dianella, a serious dog attack has left a 49-year-old woman hospitalised and resulted in the death of her pet dog. The incident occurred on Saturday morning while the woman and her smaller dog were walking along Sycamore Rise, and it was recorded on CCTV. Two loose dogs were involved in the attack and are currently under the care of the City of Stirling. As the injured woman recuperates, local authorities are gathering statements from witnesses, including the dogs’ owner, to determine the fate of the animals.

RSPCA WA’s Chief Operating Officer, Hannah Dreaver, described this incident as one of the most severe dog attacks she has encountered, highlighting the growing concern regarding such attacks in Perth. Reports indicate that dog attacks are frequent across the city, resulting in hundreds of injuries annually. Tim Howeling, a lawyer from Cornerstone Legal, noted that the frequency and severity of these attacks are increasing, stating that individuals charged in such cases could face a maximum fine of $10,000. The injured woman may also have the option to pursue legal action for damages.

The City of Stirling faces the decision of whether to return the dogs to their owner or retain them, potentially leading to their euthanasia. Factors under consideration include the safety of rehoming the dogs with their existing owners. This incident raises significant concerns about dog ownership responsibilities, with Dreaver urging owners to ensure their dogs are secured within their properties and properly socialised.

As the situation unfolds, the local council seeks to ensure the safety of the community while addressing the rights and responsibilities of dog owners.
