A man is currently evading authorities after stealing a substantial amount of fuel from a family-operated petrol station in Sydney’s south. Surveillance footage captured the suspect filling multiple jerry cans with approximately 600 litres of diesel on Saturday, while he failed to settle a bill totalling $2874 at the Budget petrol station located in Mascot.
Remarkably, prior to his theft, the man interacted with the petrol station attendant, almost colliding with him during his escape. The attendant pursued him down Baxter Road but faced a harrowing moment when the thief narrowly missed hitting him while attempting to reverse down the street. Despite the chase, the man successfully fled the scene, and further investigations revealed that he was driving a car that had reportedly been stolen.
Diann Melas, the operations manager at Budget Petrol, expressed her disappointment, highlighting the impact such criminal acts have on small family businesses. She noted that each store operates independently, and the loss of nearly $3000 in fuel is a significant blow to their expenses. The rising costs in fuel prices have led to a troubling increase in theft incidents, with the Australian Association of Convenience Stores reporting a 50% surge in fuel theft during the ongoing fuel crisis.
It’s not only urban areas facing these bold thefts; rural Queensland is experiencing similar challenges. A 59-year-old man was charged with stealing 1000 litres of diesel from a property near Yelarbon, located about four hours west of the Gold Coast. Police allege that he siphoned fuel from a storage unit into a bulk container in the tray of his 2006 Holden Crewman ute, before departing the scene.
Local authorities, alongside community members, played a key role in the investigation, leading to the man’s apprehension and the recovery of the vehicle on a property along the Cunningham Highway. He has been charged with theft and is scheduled to appear in the Goondiwindi Magistrates Court on April 22.
With diesel prices surpassing $3 a litre, local farmers are urged to take proactive measures to safeguard their fuel supplies. Recommendations include securing fuel storage, installing visible security cameras, and positioning tanks out of view from the road to deter potential thieves.
