Israel and Lebanon have reached a ten-day ceasefire, as announced by US President Donald Trump. This development comes two days after both nations engaged in their first diplomatic talks in decades in Washington. The ceasefire, which is set to commence at 5pm Eastern Time (7am AEST), follows a month of conflict primarily involving Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group from Lebanon.
Lebanon has been firm on the need for a ceasefire to halt hostilities with Israel before any further discussions can take place. The Lebanese government has also expressed its commitment to disarming Hezbollah.
In his statement, Trump underscored the importance of these talks, inviting the leaders of both countries to the White House for what he described as “the first meaningful discussions” between Israel and Lebanon since 1983. He expressed optimism about the situation, indicating that both nations desire peace and suggesting that it could be achieved swiftly.
Historically, Israel and Lebanon signed an accord in 1983, which entailed formal recognition of Israel by Lebanon in exchange for Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory. However, this agreement collapsed amidst Lebanon’s civil war and was officially annulled a year later.
Trump highlighted that the decision to pause the fighting was the result of “excellent” conversations he had with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Both leaders now appear committed to exploring avenues towards lasting peace in the region.
Overall, hopes are now pinned on the ceasefire to create a conducive environment for future dialogue and potential resolution of long-standing issues between the two nations.
