Andrew Johns has predicted that the Penrith Panthers, considered the leading contenders for the premiership, might face a significant setback in Round Seven of the NRL season. He anticipates a surprise defeat against the Dolphins in Darwin, a match scheduled for Friday night in challenging hot and humid conditions.
After suffering their first loss of the season, the Panthers will be without key players, including centre Casey McLean, who is suspended, and forward Liam Martin, sidelined by a knee injury. This lack of depth has led Johns to conclude that the Panthers could be vulnerable in the upcoming clash.
Johns boldly stated on Wide World of Sports’ Freddy and the Eighth’s Tips, “I’m going a big upset. Biggest upset, I think, of the season so far, Dolphins.” He expressed concern over the Panthers’ bench strength, particularly given the high temperatures in Darwin, which the Bureau of Meteorology predicts will reach 33 degrees Celsius on game day, with potential showers and storms.
The Dolphins, coming off a bye week, have had inconsistent form this season, winning only two out of their five matches, leaving them positioned 12th on the ladder after a narrow victory over the Titans prior to the break. Their fresh state might provide an advantage against a depleted Panthers side.
Despite Johns’ predictions, Brad Fittler remains sceptical about the Dolphins’ capability to topple a strong team like Penrith. He noted that the Dolphins have struggled with the evolution of the game this season, suggesting their attack is not up to par compared to last year when they were top scorers. “I don’t think they have it in their attack,” Fittler remarked, suggesting that the team hasn’t adapted well this season.
In contrast to Johns, he is confident that the Panthers will bounce back from their recent defeat. As the match approaches, the anticipation builds for a potentially thrilling and pivotal encounter in the NRL season.
