The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has revealed that about 6.7 million customers, or over 75% of households, are currently on electricity plans that aren’t the cheapest option.
According to Canstar, a financial comparison platform, switching to a better plan could yield an average saving of $291 a year, with some households able to save as much as $490, contributing to an estimated total savings of $1.9 billion across Australia.
Consumers receive notifications regarding better offers about every 100 days as per the Better Bills Guideline from the Australian Energy Retailers. This directive prompts retailers to inform customers about potential savings if they were to switch plans. Amid the data, it’s noted that 27% of those on non-cheapest plans are subscribed to plans with the same name as previous versions but at different rates, underscoring the importance of understanding plan distinctions.
