Energy Minister Chris Bowen has highlighted that the ongoing fire at Viva’s Geelong oil refinery will likely affect the national fuel supply. This facility is critical, contributing 10% of Australia’s total fuel and 50% of the fuel consumed in Victoria.
In an interview with Today, Bowen confirmed that there would be a reduction in production levels. Currently, while production of jet fuel and diesel is still happening, it is occurring at a decreased capacity for safety precautionary measures. The primary concern at this time, however, is the impact on petrol production.
The blaze remains uncontrolled, and Bowen noted that it is too soon to ascertain the full extent of the consequences for fuel supply. "This is not an encouraging development," he remarked, acknowledging that much remains uncertain regarding the situation’s ramifications.
He advised the public to purchase fuel according to their needs without excessive stockpiling, urging people to buy just what is necessary.
