Energy Minister Chris Bowen has confirmed that the fire at Viva’s Geelong oil refinery will affect Australia’s fuel supply. The refinery is responsible for producing 10% of the national fuel output and a substantial 50% of Victoria’s fuel needs. During an interview on Today, Bowen acknowledged that the incident would disrupt production levels.
Currently, while the production of jet fuel and diesel is ongoing, it is occurring at lower levels due to safety precautions. Bowen noted that the primary impact at this stage is on petrol production. The fire remains out of control, and it is too early to determine the full extent of its effects on fuel supply.
Bowen described the situation as regrettable but emphasised that more information would emerge over time regarding its impact. He urged the public to purchase only the fuel they require, advising against hoarding.
