Victorian residents may soon benefit from half-priced public transport fares as part of the state government’s new policies aimed at alleviating cost-of-living pressures. Following a temporary initiative that made public transport free during March, a proposal to permanently reduce fares could be unveiled in the upcoming state budget on May 5. This measure is a strategic response to rising petrol prices and aims to ease financial burdens on commuters.

The current free public transport initiative is set to end at the conclusion of April. However, reports suggest that the government is leaning towards implementing fare reductions as a long-term solution. The expected cost of a standard two-hour journey could be approximately $2.85, which reflects a significant shift in policy after the free travel period that reportedly saved regular passengers around $228 each month, incurring a loss of $71 million in government revenue.

Research indicates that while the free public transport program has influenced some commuters to use public transport more often, it has only minimally impacted their decision to forsake car travel. Many residents reported enjoying increased access to public transport, but barriers such as longer travel times and service reliability continue to hinder a complete shift away from personal vehicles.

In addition to the fare adjustments, Tasmania has introduced free public transport until July, while Queensland has sustained a fare of 50 cents for over 18 months. Jacinta Allan’s government continues to introduce various policies to enhance convenience and address voter concerns ahead of the November state election.

Moreover, addressing another aspect of the transport issue, the CFMEU union has announced that first and second-year apprentices will qualify for a $100 fuel voucher to assist with rising fuel costs, particularly as many tradespeople rely on vehicles for work transport. This initiative is seen as essential in light of escalating fuel prices, which risk affecting apprenticeship completion rates amidst a growing shortage of skilled workers.

In summary, Victoria is poised to reduce public transport fares as a part of broader measures to support residents facing increasing living costs, while simultaneously exploring other initiatives to help transport-dependent workers manage their expenses.
