Zac Lomax showcased his skills during the Western Force’s recent match against the Crusaders, scoring a try and assisting in another, contributing to a thrilling 31-26 victory over the reigning champions. Despite his impressive performance following his move from the NRL, former Wallabies Morgan Turinui and Matt Dunning pointed out that Lomax still needs to develop greater game awareness, a process that takes time.

Making his first start for the Force after an impressive debut against the Drua, Lomax made a considerable impact in the game, particularly noted for his second-half try that equalised the score. His ability to connect with teammates was evident when he assisted in the Force’s opening try, demonstrating his versatility and flair. Halfback Henry Robertson frequently aimed to involve Lomax through strategic kicks, which proved effective.

However, during the match, he also exhibited some defensive lapses. One significant moment saw him fail to advance in defence, which allowed the Crusaders to develop an attacking opportunity. This was recognised as a crucial learning point for Lomax, who was substituted shortly after, leading to the Force scoring two additional tries that sealed their victory.

Coach Cron expressed satisfaction with Lomax’s contributions, acknowledging the challenges he faces in adjusting to a new code but optimistic about his future growth. Both Dunning and Turinui applauded Lomax’s physical abilities and engagement in plays, yet highlighted the need for better decision-making and positioning, particularly in defensive situations.

Turinui noted that while Lomax excels in individual skills, he needs to develop a stronger understanding of team dynamics on the field. He emphasised the necessity for Lomax to communicate effectively with his teammates to enhance his defensive game. Improved communication and clarity regarding his role in complex plays can significantly elevate Lomax’s performance.

As the only Super Rugby Pacific team not competing in the Super Round this weekend, the Western Force will use this bye round for further development and preparation, aiming to harness Lomax’s talents while bolstering his game awareness for the future.
