The Australian federal government is launching a significant $20 million initiative aimed at promoting fuel conservation amid ongoing turmoil in the Middle East that has led to rising energy prices and supply challenges. Dubbed “Every little bit helps,” this campaign encourages Australians to rethink their driving habits and consider alternatives such as public transport.

Key messages in the campaign include reducing car usage, driving smoothly to enhance fuel efficiency, minimising the weight of vehicles, and opting for walking or public transport over driving. These tips will be disseminated through various channels, including television and online platforms, as well as outdoor advertising in locations like billboards and bus stations.

Launching nationwide, the campaign comes on the heels of an urgent national cabinet meeting convened to address the fuel crisis. Infrastructure Minister Catherine King emphasised the campaign’s role in aiding essential workers, asserting that all efforts to conserve fuel will contribute to maintaining essential services.

King pointed out that the global fuel shortage impacts everyone, and suggested practical measures—such as combining errands to limit trips and filling up only with the necessary amount of fuel—to help the public navigate the situation.

In tandem with this campaign, the government is rolling out a National Fuel Security Plan to keep Australians informed about fuel supplies and any changes to the situation. Currently, Energy Minister Chris Bowen reported that the country is in a stable position regarding fuel reserves, with supplies sufficient for the short term. Australia holds approximately 38 days’ worth of petrol, 31 days of diesel, and 28 days of jet fuel in reserve.

The campaign’s launch follows Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s recent discussions in Singapore, resulting in a commitment from Singapore to ensure the ongoing supply of petrol, which currently constitutes about 55 per cent of Australia’s petrol resources.

As Australia progresses into this new phase of its “keep Australia moving” plan, both the government’s provision of information and the public’s adherence to advisable practices are seen as crucial in navigating these challenging circumstances.
