Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, has bravely spoken out about her struggles with mental health, specifically highlighting an Acute Stress Reaction she experienced during a doping control incident in December. The Czech athlete revealed that after enduring months of physical and emotional strain, the unexpected arrival of a doping officer for a test pushed her to a breaking point.

In her candid Instagram post, the 26-year-old expressed the difficulty of addressing these personal challenges but emphasised the importance of transparency regarding her mental health. She shared that ongoing injuries, relentless pressure, and persistent sleep issues had left her feeling depleted and vulnerable. Vondrousova also mentioned that years of receiving hateful messages had eroded her sense of safety, making her particularly anxious about unexpected visitors.

When the doping officer arrived late at night, she felt her safety was compromised, which led to her emotional response. Vondrousova stressed that her reaction stemmed from a desire for security rather than an attempt to evade testing. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) acknowledged her comments and confirmed that she was not under a mandatory provisional suspension.

Since that December incident, Vondrousova has not competed since the Adelaide International in January, withdrawing from the Australian Open due to a shoulder injury. She is, however, listed to participate in the upcoming Madrid Open. Experts have diagnosed her with an Acute Stress Reaction and Generalised Anxiety Disorder, revealing the profound impact these experiences have had on her mental state.

Referencing fellow Czech tennis player Petra Kvitova, who was attacked in her home by an intruder, Vondrousova highlighted the heightened awareness surrounding safety among athletes. “After what happened to Petra, we don’t take strangers at our door lightly,” she remarked, illustrating the gravity of her situation.

Vondrousova expressed her determination to navigate her path to recovery, both on the court and in her personal life, saying, “I’m still working to clear my name, but at the same time I need to take care of myself.” As she endeavours to regain her footing, her openness about her mental health battles serves as an important reminder of the pressures athletes face, often beyond the public eye.
