Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has bravely shared her struggles with mental health, particularly following a distressing doping control incident that led to an Acute Stress Reaction. The Czech tennis star, who triumphed at Wimbledon in 2023, described how the incident in December triggered a breaking point after enduring months of intense physical and mental strain.

Vondrousova revealed that a doping control officer’s abrupt arrival for an immediate test felt like a serious violation of her privacy, igniting feelings of fear and vulnerability. In her heartfelt Instagram post, she expressed the difficulty of discussing her mental health, elaborating on the cumulative toll of injuries, relentless pressure, and ongoing sleep issues that left her feeling fragile and exhausted.

She emphasised how years of receiving hateful messages and threats had eroded her sense of safety, making her reaction to the late-night visit more intense. Vondrousova clarified that her response was driven by a need for security rather than an attempt to evade testing.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) acknowledged her comments and confirmed that she is not facing a provisional suspension, despite being under investigation for allegedly refusing a test. Vondrousova has not competed since January’s Adelaide International and pulled out of the Australian Open due to a shoulder injury but is set to participate in the upcoming Madrid Open.

Following professional guidance, Vondrousova was diagnosed with an Acute Stress Reaction and Generalised Anxiety Disorder, stating that fear compromised her ability to think clearly during the incident. Drawing a parallel with her fellow Czech champion Petra Kvitova, who suffered a traumatic home invasion, Vondrousova noted that such experiences heighten their concerns about safety.

As she navigates her path back to tennis, Vondrousova expressed a commitment to clear her name while prioritising her well-being. “I’m trying to slowly find my way back — both on and off the court,” she concluded, highlighting the importance of addressing mental health in the often-pressure-filled world of professional sports.
