The strait has been reopened, and while Trump is relishing a perceived success, the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon continues under tense conditions. However, a potential flashpoint remains: the US’s demand for Iran to surrender its uranium stockpiles.

In a recent interview with CBS, Trump expressed optimism about reaching an “agreement” to secure Iran’s uranium. He emphasized that the US would not resort to military action, stating, “We’ll go down and get it with Iran, and then we’ll take it.” He suggested that negotiations would preclude any need for conflict, declaring, “That’s better.” Trump revealed plans for a meeting between US and Iranian representatives over the weekend to discuss moving forward.

Contrarily, Iran dismissed the notion of a deal, firmly asserting that its enriched uranium would not be relinquished. Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated, “Iran’s enriched uranium is sacred to us like the soil of Iran,” indicating a strong resistance to any agreements that involve transferring uranium to the US.

While the current situation may appear stabilised, the differing narratives and objectives of the US and Iran suggest that the potential for renewed tensions is very much alive, particularly regarding the volatile issue of uranium enrichment.
