A major traffic incident on the Hume Highway has resulted in the closure of one of Australia’s busiest roads in both directions. The accident, involving a B-double truck and multiple other vehicles, occurred south of Violet Town in Victoria, leading to significant disruptions for both northbound and southbound traffic.

Four individuals, comprising two adults and two children, have been transported to Wangaratta Hospital for medical care, although their current health status remains unknown. Emergency services, including six units from the Country Fire Authority, police, State Emergency Service (SES), and ambulances, are actively responding to the situation at the scene.

Violet Town, located to the south of Shepparton, is a rural area that sees a high level of traffic on the Hume Highway, which connects Sydney and Melbourne and is regarded as one of the country’s key freight routes. The highway is heavily used, with thousands of trucks travelling daily.

VicTraffic has advised alternative routes for motorists impacted by the closure. Northbound drivers are encouraged to take the Goulburn Valley Highway via Seymour to Shepparton and then return to the Hume Highway through Benalla. Southbound traffic should exit at Violet Town and use Murchison-Violet Town Road to reach the Goulburn Valley Highway before rejoining the Hume at Seymour. These detours are expected to add approximately 45 minutes to travel times.
