A mother, Maree Mavis Crabtree, has been accused of murdering her 26-year-old son Jonathan by administering a lethal dose of prescription painkillers in a smoothie. This incident allegedly took place on July 19, 2017, in their family home situated north of the Gold Coast. Prosecutors allege that Crabtree intended to profit from her son’s death by filing a $125,000 insurance claim.

At 59 years old, Crabtree pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, attempted murder, and fraud when her trial commenced at the Brisbane Supreme Court. Testimonies, including nearly five hours of pre-recorded video evidence provided by her daughter Tara Crabtree, were presented to the jury. Tara, who was living with her brother and mother at the time, stated that she was asked to keep a lookout while Maree prepared the fatal smoothie.

According to Tara, Crabtree crushed various prescription medications with a hammer and combined the powder with fruit, including watermelon, mango, and pineapple, before blending it all together. Tara recounted that Maree had specifically instructed her to watch out for Jonathan, and upon his emergence from his room, he was given the tainted drink.

The prosecution has indicated that Jonathan’s behaviour had deteriorated significantly as a result of injuries sustained in a prior car accident. During her testimony, Tara claimed that Maree expressed a desire for a more peaceful life, stating they would be better off without Jonathan, whom she described as violent and difficult to live with.

Following the incident, Tara recounted how she heard Jonathan making distressing noises after consuming the smoothie, but Maree instructed her not to intervene. Tara mentioned that her mother feared arrest if Jonathan were to survive the incident and expressed concerns over the potential financial fallout from an alleged robbery Jonathan had been involved in.

In the wake of Jonathan’s death, Tara stated that Maree instructed her to tell the police it was a suicide, revealing she was in a state of shock at the time and felt pressured to follow her mother’s instructions.

The jury is expected to witness further video evidence as the trial continues. This tragic case highlights the deep complexities within family dynamics and the extreme measures that can be taken in dire circumstances.
