Carlton’s coach, Michael Voss, shared insights into Elijah Hollands’ disappointment following his underwhelming performance against Collingwood on Thursday night. During the match, Hollands managed only a single disposal while playing 60% of the game, before being benched in a closely contested match that concluded with the Magpies securing a narrow victory, scoring 13.10 (88) to 12.11 (83).

Post-match, Voss noted that the 23-year-old was feeling “pretty shattered” and “emotional” about his contribution, expressing his disappointment to Voss in a private conversation. Hollands felt he hadn’t met expectations and believed he had let the team down, admitting to struggles in getting involved in the game. His performance, marked by noticeable jitters and an apparent lack of focus, drew attention and speculation from fans on social media.

Despite the commentary circulating online, neither Hollands nor the club has responded to the observations regarding his unusual behaviour during the match. Voss highlighted Hollands’ emotional state, acknowledging the importance of supporting players through tough times. He recognized that Hollands was clearly upset with his on-field performance and the impact it had on the team.

Having started his AFL journey with the Gold Coast Suns after being selected with the seventh pick in the 2020 draft, Hollands has since played 33 games for Carlton after transferring to the club at the end of the 2023 season. Voss commented on the strategic decision-making in the closing quarter of the match, noting that as performance levels fluctuate, it becomes crucial to find the right mix of players on the field.

In light of this experience, Voss emphasised the importance of ongoing support for players like Hollands, who encounter difficulties in high-pressure situations. He reassured that while disappointing performances can lead to emotional reactions, the focus should remain on collective support to help players bounce back.
