In a closely contested AFL match, Carlton teenager Talor Byrne missed a crucial chance to equalise against Collingwood after the final siren, marking another defeat for the struggling Blues. This game, held at the MCG, saw Carlton relinquish yet another second-half lead, ending the match at 13.10 (88) to 12.11 (83) in favour of Collingwood.
Byrne, just 18 years old and in his fourth game, found himself with a free kick opportunity to tie the scores after Collingwood’s Josh Daicos was penalised for an off-the-ball incident. However, with the roar of the Collingwood fans echoing around him, his shot from 40 metres missed the target and went out for a behind, leaving him devastated and his teammates rushing to console him.
Carlton coach Michael Voss, who observed the match from the boundary, expressed his regrets about the team’s continuing inability to maintain leads. Nevertheless, he offered Byrne some comfort after the game. “It’s important to know that it’s not solely on his shoulders,” Voss stated. He reassured that the young player had likely practised that very moment countless times but acknowledged the immense pressure of performing in front of 78,058 fans in such a pivotal moment. Voss highlighted the team spirit following the miss, emphasising that together, they experience both wins and losses.
Compounding Carlton’s woes, star forward Harry McKay suffered a hit to the head during a marking contest, casting doubt on his availability for their upcoming Anzac Day match against Fremantle. Voss refrained from commenting on McKay’s status regarding a head injury assessment, only revealing that he was ruled out at that moment.
Despite leading by 14 points at half-time and 18 at three-quarter time, Carlton was outplayed in the last quarter as a resurgent Collingwood, bolstered by Nick Daicos—who had a standout performance with 39 possessions—struck back with seven goals compared to Carlton’s one.
This loss leaves Carlton in a difficult position, sitting 16th on the ladder with five defeats in six matches this season. They have consistently fallen apart in the second half, having previously squandered leads against Sydney, Melbourne, and now Collingwood. The resilience of the side will be tested as they prepare to seek redemption in their next fixture.
