The US Navy has initiated a blockade of all Iranian ports to pressure Tehran into agreeing to open the vital Strait of Hormuz and to pursue a peace settlement. This action is part of a broader strategy to influence Iran’s negotiations.
Beginning at 10am EDT on Monday (midnight Tuesday AEST), the Central Command of the US military stated that the blockade targets “vessels of all nations” engaged in the movement of goods to or from Iranian ports and coastal regions. This includes all ports located on both the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
The move is seen as a significant escalation in US-Iran relations, aiming to curtail Iran’s maritime activities and assert control over a strategically important shipping lane. The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for global oil transportation, and the US seeks to ensure its security and open passage.
