St George Illawarra Dragons are facing deeper issues beyond just their coaching and fullback situation, as highlighted by Phil Gould. Currently, the team has suffered six consecutive losses this season, increasing the pressure on both coach Shane Flanagan and the veteran players. Amidst these struggles, Scott Drinkwater has emerged as a possible replacement for fullback, particularly with Clint Gutherson’s career nearing its conclusion.

However, Gould firmly believes that merely changing the coach or bringing in a new player will not resolve the underlying problems. He recalls conducting an independent review of the Dragons six years ago when Paul McGregor was head coach, uncovering financial restraints that hindered necessary changes. Fast-forward to 2026, and the club remains stuck in a similar predicament, suggesting that a fundamental shift is required.

Gould expressed concerns about the club’s inability to foresee future victories, prompting discussions about firing the coach, a typical reaction in sports when teams struggle. But he argues that a coach’s dismissal won’t address the root causes of their woes. He emphasised that the Dragons have been misdirected over the years, and it’s imperative for management to reassess their strategies to emerge from this long-standing rut.

According to Gould, meaningful recovery for the Dragons may require a decade of dedicated effort rather than instant fixes like player signings or coaching changes. He voiced skepticism over the pursuit of Drinkwater, suggesting that the club appears to be casting a wide net for talent without a clear strategic vision.

On the front of player transitions, the potential shift for Gutherson poses a new angle; he is reportedly amenable to changing his position to accommodate Drinkwater, with his contract running through to the end of the next season. As the Dragons navigate these turbulent times, it’s clear they will need to address their systemic issues to avoid further decline in performance.
