St George Illawarra Dragons’ chairman, Andrew Lancaster, has responded to media criticism regarding the sacking of coach Shane Flanagan, asserting that it was a “mutual decision” following a recent meeting after the team’s 11th consecutive loss. Despite Flanagan’s earlier contract extension, the club has opted for a change as they continue to struggle this season, failing to secure a win in their first seven games of 2026.

At a media briefing near the club’s new high-performance centre, Lancaster also announced the dismissal of the head of football, Ben Haran, highlighting the emotional discussions held with staff amid the upheaval. He expressed empathy towards fans, acknowledging the team’s disappointing performance and affirming that everyone associated with the club—players, coaching staff, management, and board—shares responsibility. He reassured supporters of the club’s commitment to improving their situation.

Flanagan’s departure marks him as the second NRL coach to be dismissed this season, following Anthony Seibold’s exit from Manly. Since Flanagan’s arrival, the Dragons have not reached the finals since 2018, and they also recently partook in changes with previous head coaches, Anthony Griffin and Paul McGregor, both having been let go in earlier seasons.

Lancaster, a director at Nine, the media group owning this publication, also critiqued the press coverage surrounding the Dragons, suggesting some reports were unjust, while others carried personal agendas. He noted the negative toll this criticism had taken on Flanagan’s mental health and mentioned the need for better representation of the club in the media.

Additionally, Flanagan’s son, Kyle, who plays as halfback for the Dragons, is in a challenging position amid calls for him to be benched. The club’s CEO, Tim Watsford, promised support for Kyle, emphasising the need to protect both father and son during this difficult time. Kyle remains contracted until 2027, and the club plans to provide ongoing support.

Looking ahead, the Dragons are scheduled to face the Roosters on Anzac Day, but it remains uncertain who will lead the team in the interim. Lancaster and Watsford indicated they would be consulting the current coaching staff to select an interim coach soon, with club legend Dean Young and former Sharks hooker Michael Ennis emerging as the frontrunners for the role.
