The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) are currently investigating a controversial photo that has surfaced, depicting one of its soldiers vandalising a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon. The image, which shows the soldier using a hammer to topple the statue, was first shared by Palestinian journalist Younis Tirawi via X, formerly known as Twitter. However, the exact timing of the image remains unclear.

In a statement, the IDF confirmed the authenticity of the photograph and expressed its commitment to addressing the incident, noting it has been scrutinised with “great severity.” The military asserted that the soldier’s actions contradict the values expected from its personnel. They have clarified that the IDF is actively engaged in operations in southern Lebanon primarily targeting Hezbollah, the militant group they accuse of establishing a terrorist infrastructure in the area.

The situation in Lebanon has been tense, with reports claiming that Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of over 2,000 individuals since March. This escalation in conflict followed an agreement between the United States and Iran for a temporary ceasefire, which, according to Israel, did not include Lebanon. Nevertheless, recent developments have led to an inclusion of Lebanon in the ceasefire discussions.

The IDF maintains that it conducts its operations with the intention of avoiding harm to civilian structures, including religious sites. They reassured the public that such actions are not in line with their operational mandate. The ongoing conflict has raised significant concerns regarding civilian safety and the impact on local communities.

As the IDF continues its investigation, many are watching closely to see how this incident will be addressed and its implications for Israeli-Lebanese relations amidst the ongoing military operations in the region.
