US Justice Department Approves Firing Squads for Executions in Effort to Increase Capital Punishment

The US Justice Department, under the Trump administration, is set to officially include firing squads as an execution method while also reinstating the use of single-drug lethal injections with pentobarbital. This follows a period of reduced federal executions during the Biden administration, which had halted the use of pentobarbital due to concerns it may cause unnecessary suffering. Currently, only three individuals remain on federal death row following President Biden’s decision to convert 37 death sentences to life imprisonment, yet the Trump administration has moved to pursue death sentences for 44 more defendants.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the previous administration did not adequately protect the public from dangerous criminals, and he commended the current directives as a return to enforcing the law and supporting victims of grave offences. Notably, the inclusion of firing squads hadn’t previously been part of federal execution protocols; however, similar methods are sanctioned across five states, including Idaho and Oklahoma.

The Department also noted that a review conducted by Attorney General Merrick Garland’s team at the end of Biden’s term had highlighted significant doubts regarding pentobarbital’s safety, leading to its removal from execution methods. The Trump administration argues that the Biden administration misinterpreted scientific findings about the drug, asserting it causes swift loss of consciousness and thus limits the potential for pain during execution.

The report indicates that executions by other means, such as electrocution and nitrogen inhalation, are also permitted, which suggests a broader strategy to address capital punishment at the federal level. Among those waiting execution are high-profile offenders like Dylann Roof, convicted of the 2015 church shooting in Charleston, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, implicated in the Boston Marathon bombing.

This shift indicates a decisive move to ramp up federal executions after a period of significant reductions, with the Justice Department signalling a renewed commitment to the death penalty as a form of punishment.
