President Trump has indicated that discussions between the United States and Iran are progressing positively, with updates anticipated over the weekend, according to reports from the Associated Press. Although he refrained from answering questions from the media regarding Iran, he remarked, “We have very good conversations going on.”
In a statement highlighting Iran’s actions, Trump mentioned that Iran “got a little cute,” specifically referencing attempts to close the Strait of Hormuz. He asserted that “They can’t blackmail us,” as tensions escalate regarding military movements in the region.
This comment came after the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced plans to blockade the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC’s naval forces conveyed through a Telegram statement that any vessels approaching the strait would be considered as collaborating with adversaries, with a warning that such ships could be targeted.
Following a brief declaration from Iran that the waterway was open, restrictions were suddenly reinstated, citing “repeated breaches of trust” by the US related to the ongoing ceasefire negotiations. The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for maritime navigation, and recent actions have raised concerns regarding shipping safety.
The British military reported that two gunboats from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard fired upon a tanker navigating the strait shortly after the renewed restrictions were announced. Additionally, a container ship in the same vicinity experienced damage from an “unknown projectile,” approximately 46 kilometres from the coast of Oman, as noted by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
As these developments unfold, the international community watches carefully, with significant implications for regional stability and global oil supply routes.
