Iranian Gunboats Fire on Tanker Just Hours After Strait of Hormuz Closure

Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) gunboats have reportedly opened fire on a tanker navigating through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway crucial for global oil shipments. This incident occurred shortly after the Iranian military announced a renewed closure of the strait, citing “repeated breaches of trust.” The UK Maritime Traffic Organisation (UKMTO) confirmed that the vessel’s crew is unharmed, although it is unclear whether the tanker sustained any damage or which nation it is registered to.

This recent escalation follows a period of tense negotiations where both Iran and the United States appeared to be moving closer to a resolution that would secure the safe passage of vessels through the strait. Iran attributed its decision to restrict maritime traffic to ongoing distrust towards the US, particularly regarding a ceasefire agreement.

Despite a prior statement from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicating that the Strait was open for shipping, Iranian state media later reported that any maritime activity would be monitored closely, with restrictions contingent upon the US maintaining its naval blockade.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump reaffirmed that the blockade would remain until a comprehensive agreement could be reached with Iran. Recent developments prompted several ships, including tankers carrying liquefied natural gas and crude oil, to reverse course away from the strait, as uncertainty looms over the safety of their passage.

In the backdrop of these tensions, newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued a warning via a written message that Iran’s navy is prepared to defeat its adversaries, reinforcing the country’s commitment to defending its territorial waters. Though Khamenei has remained largely out of public view since his appointment, his message coincided with Army Day, praising the military for its defence of national sovereignty.

In other news, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh dismissed claims from President Trump regarding enriched uranium held by Iran. Khatibzadeh indicated that Iran is not ready to engage in further talks unless the US modifies its stringent negotiating stance. Trump had previously stated intentions to retrieve enriched uranium believed to be stored at damaged nuclear sites following US military operations last year.

As the situation continues to evolve, the implications for international shipping and relations between Iran and the US remain precarious.
