Hawthorn to Keep an Eye on Trio of Stars After Hard-Fought Victory Against Port Adelaide

Hawthorn is nervously anticipating the outcomes of two match review incidents following their hard-fought victory over Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium. In a thrilling encounter, the Hawks narrowly secured a 13.11 (89) to 13.8 (86) win, with Port’s Mitch Georgiades missing a crucial set shot that could have clinched the game.

Despite their win, Hawthorn’s captain James Sicily and star forward Dylan Moore face scrutiny for striking Port defender Logan Evans. Both players were penalised for gut strikes during the match, and the AFL has been stringent on such offenses this season, which often leads to automatic one-week suspensions. This could see both Sicily and Moore sidelined for the upcoming Anzac Day clash against Gold Coast in Tasmania.

Moore may have some grounds for contesting his case, as he seemed to strike Evans with an open hand rather than a closed fist. Sicily, meanwhile, argued with officials, claiming his contact was made with Evans’ elbow. According to Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall, such acts of indiscipline from team leaders are frustrating, indicating that both players must take responsibility for knowing the rules.

Former West Coast coach Adam Simpson echoed this sentiment, noting the need for discipline, especially from team captains. Evans, the target of the strikes, was considered to have provoked a reaction.

Additionally, Hawthorn is concerned about forward Nick Watson, who sustained a thumb injury late in the game but returned after being strapped up. Watson was pivotal to Hawthorn’s win, scoring five goals and demonstrating his capability as a match-winner, having previously played a critical role in their Easter Monday victory over Geelong.

For Port Adelaide, Zak Butters bounced back from controversy over umpire abuse last week, finishing the match with 35 disposals and a goal, while teammate Jason Horne-Francis contributed with 28 touches and two goals.

In terms of the season standings, Hawthorn finds itself second on the ladder, closely trailing Sydney, with five wins from six matches. In contrast, Port Adelaide is positioned 11th, struggling with only two victories to date.
