A tragic accident on the Monash Freeway on Sunday around 2pm has led to the death of a young boy with severe upper body injuries. He was initially taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in critical condition but sadly passed away yesterday, confirmed by the police.

The accident involved a Mazda, carrying the boy, a 46-year-old woman from Sunbury, and an eight-year-old girl who sustained minor injuries. The woman is reported to be in a critical state and is currently receiving treatment at the Alfred Hospital. In addition, three occupants from a blue Mitsubishi—a 68-year-old woman from Campbellfield, a 39-year-old woman from Glenroy, and a six-year-old girl—were taken to hospital, but their injuries are non-life-threatening.

Fortunately, none of the individuals in the three other vehicles involved in the crash were hurt. The 34-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Tiguan has been arrested and has been released pending further investigation.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are actively looking into the circumstances surrounding this serious incident.
