Sharks centre Siosifa Talakai faces scrutiny from the match review committee following an incident where he was reported for a knee lift that resulted in Murray Taulagi being knocked out during a game in Townsville. With ten minutes remaining in the match between the Cowboys and the Sharks, Taulagi attempted to tackle Talakai as Cronulla advanced deep into enemy territory. In mid-air, Talakai’s knee struck Taulagi in the head, causing him to immediately fall to the ground, appearing dazed and confused.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, no penalty was awarded at the time, and play continued until the final tackle. Eventually, Taulagi was compelled to leave the field for a Head Injury Assessment (HIA), prompting the referee to place Talakai on report shortly after. Former player Mick Ennis commented that he did not perceive any intent in Talakai’s actions, suggesting it was simply a case of him coming down while bracing.
At the time of the incident, the Cowboys were leading 36-28, with Taulagi having scored three tries, one of which featured a celebratory flourish. He has been a player of interest as his contract is due to expire, with speculation linking him to a move to the Roosters.
In a high-scoring affair, Talakai had also made an impact for the Sharks, scoring twice in the first half. Teammate KL Iro matched that effort by netting a hat-trick. Iro’s third try came just minutes before the finish, narrowing the score to 42-34 and setting the stage for a tense conclusion.
The Sharks had the chance to narrow the deficit further when Nicho Hynes aimed a kick towards the corner, but Iro was thwarted by a solid defensive effort from Thomas Chester, Heilum Luki, and Tom Dearden, who bundled him into touch. The match concluded dramatically with Luki capitalising on a dropped ball from Iro, sprinting away to seal the Cowboys’ victory.
