Adelaide Family Turns to Crowdfunding for Son’s Essential Cancer Treatment Following Broken Promise

A family from Adelaide is facing a dire situation as they seek financial assistance from the public to fund necessary cancer treatment for their son, Levi, who is battling stage-four medulloblastoma, an aggressive brain tumour. This heart-wrenching situation arose after the anticipated Proton Therapy Unit, which was meant to revolutionise cancer treatment in South Australia, has yet to materialise despite significant investment and promises made back in 2016.

At only nine years old, Levi’s diagnosis came as a shock to his mother, Jade Elston. Following an arduous journey involving intense chemotherapy and radiation, Levi was declared in remission multiple times. Regrettably, the cancer has returned, leaving the family in a precarious position as they navigate Levi’s predominantly debilitating health conditions. Elston described the emotional turmoil she faces, feeling helpless as a mother watching her child suffer— a reality made worse by the spectre of mortality that looms over children who relapse from medulloblastoma.

The Elstons’ hope lies in a specific treatment known as proton therapy, which is uniquely effective for childhood cancers. However, due to the absence of the promised facility in Adelaide, the family is now crowdfunding for international treatment in Singapore, unveiling a disheartening truth—that despite substantial government funding allocated for the Bragg Centre intended to house a proton therapy machine, the facility remains incomplete and unsuited for its intended purpose.

Government officials have expressed regret about the delays and complications surrounding the treatment’s introduction; however, this reassurance holds little comfort for the Elstons. As they grapple with the harsh reality of their situation, Jade’s plea to authorities resonates deeply, urging them to rectify the failure to deliver appropriate cancer treatment options for children and stressing the urgency of the matter as lives hang in the balance.

Levi’s battle highlights the critical need for accessible cancer treatment in Australia, especially for children facing terminal conditions. As the family continues to seek support, they embody the hope that urgent action will be taken, and that politicians will realise the devastating consequences of inaction in the face of such a pressing health crisis.
