An unattended bag at Perth Airport triggered a rapid police response and caused significant disruptions, affecting travel plans for numerous passengers. The incident unfolded when a man reportedly entered Terminal 1, made threats, and subsequently left behind the bag before exiting the premises. This prompted both federal and state police to cordon off the terminal’s check-in area in the afternoon.

Authorities swiftly apprehended a suspect in the city, who is currently being interrogated regarding the incident. As a precaution, an exclusion zone was set up on the Terminal 1 forecourt, leading to the closure of the check-in zones and the short-term car park. Passengers and airport staff were unable to access affected areas during the investigation.

By around 6:30 PM (8:30 PM AEST), cheers erupted as the terminal reopened, much to the relief of passengers eager to resume their travel. A spokesperson for Perth Airport confirmed that the investigation had concluded, allowing for a gradual reopening of the impacted areas. They assured travellers that efforts were in place to restore normal operations quickly, albeit with some anticipated delays. Passengers were advised to check with their airlines for the most up-to-date information regarding flights.

The enhanced security measures were a response to mitigate any potential threat, although some passengers voiced their concerns over the airport’s handling of communications during the incident. One individual expressed worry about whether they would make their flights, citing the cascading effect such disruptions could have on connecting flights.

The Australian Federal Police, alongside state police and airport authorities, managed the situation while urging the public to avoid the area. Overall, while the security response was deemed necessary to ensure public safety, it caused temporary chaos for those travelling through the airport.
