A graffiti artist was apprehended during a live press conference featuring Queensland’s transport minister, Brent Mickelberg, at South Brisbane Station. The minister was discussing reduced rail services when the individual began spray-painting the word “QRUPT” on a wall behind him. Railway squad officers removed the man from the scene as he reiterated the word.
The incident unfolded during a time of escalating tensions between Queensland Rail and transport unions, which have led to the disruption of nearly 300 rail services. Mickelberg acknowledged the significant frustration commuters are experiencing, stating his own discontent with the ongoing enterprise bargaining negotiations with the unions, including the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU). He pointed out that maintenance work had been neglected due to the unions’ industrial actions, resulting in insufficient rail rolling stock to support the necessary services.
Mickelberg emphasised that while there are enough trains to implement a “customer-optimised timetable,” the unions’ partial work bans have hindered operational efficacy. He accused the RTBU of failing to maintain the trains, attributing the current situation directly to union actions. The RTBU, in turn, has asserted that their rolling strike action is intended to be “measured and deliberate.”
In response to the developing situation, the Fair Work Commission has called a meeting for Thursday to address the deadlock between the parties. Meanwhile, police confirmed that a 30-year-old man from Herston has been charged with wilful damage by graffiti, public nuisance, and possession of graffiti instruments, with a court appearance scheduled for May 13.
