Scott Drinkwater could be a pivotal signing for the Dragons, with Andrew Johns claiming a $1 million annual salary for the fullback would be a "bargain." The Dragons are struggling, having started the season winless, with player discontent leading to requests for early releases and fan protests brewing.
Despite Drinkwater initially rejecting an offer, the club views him as a key target and is considering revising their proposal to secure his services. On the program Wide World of Sports, Johns stressed that Drinkwater could inject much-needed creativity into the Dragons’ play, noting he is about to enter the peak of his career.
Johns expressed optimism, suggesting that securing Drinkwater would be a significant boost for the club and its supporters. He did, however, caution against the media involvement of player managers, urging the club to finalise the deal quickly if proceedings get underway.
The Dragons are currently seeking enhancements to their squad, particularly in the fullback position, following the expectation that veteran captain Clint Gutherson might be switched to a different role by 2027. Meanwhile, Drinkwater remains a highly sought-after talent, with interest from the newly established Perth Bears and several Sydney clubs.
Compounding the Dragons’ recruitment challenges, two of their players have made headlines for wanting out, with forward Jayden Su’A’s exit request followed by the young prospect Loko Pasifiki Tonga also seeking an early release despite a contract extending to 2028. As it stands, the Cowboys envision rising star Jaxson Purdue as their future fullback, influencing Drinkwater’s potential exit.
Drinkwater, aged 28, showcased his talents by spearheading the Cowboys to a four-match winning streak before their recent loss to Manly, further highlighting his ability on the field as he contemplates his future.
