In a devastating incident of domestic violence in the southeastern United States, a gunman has tragically claimed the lives of eight children across two separate homes, with police confirming that a total of ten individuals were shot. This event, occurring on Sunday (Monday AEST), marks the deadliest mass shooting in the country in over two years.
Chris Bordelon, a spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department in Louisiana, described the scene as “extensive” and unprecedented for many of the officers involved. Victims ranged in age from as young as one to around fourteen years old, and several were reportedly related to the shooter.
The assailant, whose identity has not yet been disclosed but is described as an adult male, died following a police pursuit after stealing a car while fleeing the shooting sites. Officers engaged in a chase and subsequently fired upon him.
Authorities are actively gathering information from the crime scenes located just south of downtown Shreveport, which include two residential areas and a third site. This act of violence stands as the most lethal mass shooting since January 2024, when eight individuals were killed in a suburb of Chicago, according to a database compiled by The Associated Press and USA Today in collaboration with Northeastern University.
During a news conference near one of the shooting locations, officials expressed their shock and requested the community’s patience as they processed the incident. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and US House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Shreveport native, both expressed their sorrow over the event and commended law enforcement for their response. Speaker Johnson stated, āWeāre holding the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.ā
This tragic occurrence has left the local community in mourning, highlighting the ongoing issues surrounding gun violence and domestic abuse in the United States.
